Chenille Varsity Letters

Unlimited Permutations and Combinations for Designers

Although the culture of varstiy letters originated with a simple design of a single alphabet in one color, the designing of varsity letters or chenille letters has now evolved into almost an art form. Designers take inspiration from different art and design forms like arabasque, art deco, art nouveau, avant garde, baroque etc.

They then combine these with the initials, emblem and colors of the school, college or university to create a design, which lends a specific character to the design. The culture, image, history and philosophy of the institute are also taken into account. And the varsity letter-one color chenille/two color felt or varsity letter- two color chenille/one color felt, is the best form of design to incorporate these without making the design too complicated or garish.

A Brief History

After the first ever introduction of Chenille Letters, football team of Harvard University also adopted the old English ‘H’ in 1875. For 25 years only some players, playing in the most important games (Yale or Princeton), were allowed by the captain to keep the jersey as an award. Later, on the popularity of varsity letters (also the most common form of award letters), came into being with the beginning of organized sports, giving rise to the necessity of uniforms, in order to distinguish the players of one team from others. And the varsity chenille letter double color remains the best form of design to do so.
